Vyāsa said: “By taking food only once a month, a man becomes purified within a year—of this there is no doubt. Likewise, O King, one who undertakes fasting is purified even within a short time.” The passage emphasizes graded austerities (especially severe dietary restraints and fasting) as expiations that cleanse grave sin, presenting self-discipline as a dharmic means of moral restoration.

Educational Q&A

Severe self-restraint—especially regulated eating and fasting—functions as prāyaścitta (expiation): it purifies even grave wrongdoing, and the stricter the discipline, the quicker the purification.

Vyāsa instructs a king on expiatory disciplines, stating that eating only once per month purifies within a year, and that fasting can purify in even less time, underscoring the efficacy of tapas within dharma.
