Janamejaya said: “O Blessed One, please explain to me the derivations and intended meanings of those many different names by which the sage Vyāsa, together with his disciples, praised Madhusūdana. I wish to hear the elucidation of the names of Lord Hari, the sovereign of the Prajāpatis; for by hearing them I shall become pure and spotless, like the autumn moon.”

The verse foregrounds the ethical and devotional idea that sacred names are not mere labels: their meanings (nirukta) reveal divine qualities, and attentive hearing of such meanings is presented as a means of inner purification.
King Janamejaya asks the teacher to explain the derivations and significance of the many epithets used by Vyāsa (with his disciples) in praising Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa/Hari), expressing a desire to become purified by hearing those explanations.
