Bhīṣma said: “Just as pure gold is refined and proven by heating, cutting, and rubbing on the touchstone, so too a person’s true worth and steadiness are revealed through disciplined testing and trial.”

True purity and excellence are not merely claimed; they are demonstrated through rigorous tests—like gold that is authenticated and refined by heat, cutting, and rubbing. Likewise, virtue and steadiness become evident when a person faces disciplined trials.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma continues instructing Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and right conduct. Here he uses a familiar metaphor from metallurgy—testing gold—to explain how character and moral strength are revealed and refined through challenges.
