Nārada at Badarīāśrama: the ultimate referent of daiva and pitṛ worship

Vyāsa said: Those are truly wise who understand that even when the body perishes, the self does not die, and that those who walk the path of dharma upheld by the cultured and disciplined are not destroyed. One who reflects on these truths and continually strengthens dharma is a learned person; but one who falls away from dharma is deluded—indeed, foolish. For actions performed on the path of karma, whether wholesome or unwholesome, yield their results to the doer exactly as they were done: the doer of base deeds falls into hell, while one who has mastered the practice of dharma goes to heaven.
True wisdom is to know the self is not destroyed with the body, to remain on the dharma-path upheld by the exemplary, and to recognize that actions unfailingly yield results: base deeds lead to hell, while perfected dharma-practice leads to heaven.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on righteous living, Vyāsa delivers a doctrinal and ethical summary: steadfastness in dharma and clear understanding of the self and karmic causality distinguish the wise from the deluded.
