Vyāsa said: “Uphold, in the proper manner, the disciplines of truthfulness, straightforwardness, freedom from anger, absence of fault-finding envy, restraint of the senses, austerity (tapas), non-violence (ahiṃsā), and compassionate non-cruelty—these are the foundations of righteous conduct.”
व्यास उवाच
The verse instructs the disciplined practice of key dharmic virtues—truth, integrity, non-anger, non-enviousness, sense-restraint, austerity, non-violence, and compassion—as a coherent ethical foundation to be maintained correctly and consistently.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction-oriented setting, Vyāsa delivers a concise ethical injunction, listing fundamental virtues to be observed as part of righteous living and inner governance after the upheavals of war.
