Vyāsa said: “From of old, the Lord Yama—unmoved by another’s pain—carries away life, uprooting a person together with his very roots and relations. Here, your life too is in Yama’s hands, and there is no one who can restrain him. Therefore, before that appointed time arrives, make your arrangements for your own protection.”

Death (Yama) is inevitable and cannot be restrained; therefore one should act with foresight—establishing protection through dharmic conduct, prudent preparation, and inner readiness—before the destined time arrives.
Vyāsa warns the listener that Yama, sovereign over life, will inevitably take away one’s life—completely, along with one’s supports and relations—and that no external power can prevent it; hence one must prepare in advance.
