Vyāsa said: The whole world is battered by Death and afflicted by old age. Night after night passes by, making itself “successful” by stealing away the lifespan of living beings. Therefore, board the boat of Dharma and cross beyond the ocean of worldly becoming. For whether a person stands or lies down, Death keeps searching him out. When you are liable to be suddenly seized and destroyed by Death at any moment, how can you sit so carefree and at ease?

Educational Q&A

Life is continually being diminished by time, and death can arrive at any moment; therefore one should not remain complacent but take refuge in Dharma and turn toward nivṛtti—inner withdrawal and liberation from saṃsāra.

In the didactic setting of the Śānti Parva, Vyāsa admonishes the listener by highlighting the inevitability of aging and death, using the image of nights ‘stealing’ lifespan and urging the person to cross the ocean of worldly existence by boarding the ‘boat’ of Dharma.
