जननीषु च वर्तन्ते ये न सम्यग्‌ युधिष्ठिर । सदेवकेषु लोकेषु ये न वर्तन्ति मानवा:,युधिष्ठिर! जो मनुष्य माताओं, देवताओं तथा सम्पूर्ण लोकोंके प्रति उत्तम बर्ताव नहीं करते हैं, उनकी दुर्गतिका ज्ञान जिससे होता है, उसी ज्ञानसे पापाचारी पुरुषोंकी अधोगतिका ज्ञान प्राप्त करे तथा तिर्यग्योनिमें पड़े हुए प्राणियोंकी जो विभिन्न गतियाँ होती हैं, उनको भी जान ले

jananīṣu ca vartante ye na samyag yudhiṣṭhira | sadevakeṣu lokeṣu ye na vartanti mānavāḥ |

Bhishma said: “O Yudhishthira, those men who do not conduct themselves properly toward their mothers, and who likewise fail to behave rightly in the worlds that include the gods, fall into ruin. By the same discernment through which one understands the wretched fate of the wicked, one should also comprehend the downward destinies of sinners and recognize the many diverse courses of beings who have fallen into animal births.”
