योनीषु च विचित्रासु संसारानशुभांस्तथा । जठरे चाशुभे वासं शोणितोदकभाजने,प्राणियोंको विचित्र-विचित्र योनियोंमें अशुभ जन्म धारण करने पड़ते हैं। रक्त और मूत्रके पात्ररूप अपवित्र गर्भाशयमें निवास करना पड़ता है, जहाँ कफ, मूत्र और मल भरा होता है तथा तीव्र दुर्गन्ध व्याप्त रहती है, जो रज और वीर्यका समुदायमात्र है, मज्जा एवं स््नायुका संग्रह है, सैकड़ों नस-नाड़ियोंमें व्याप्त है तथा जिसमें नौ द्वार हैं; उस अपवित्र पुर अर्थात् शरीरमें जीवको रहना पड़ता है। नरेश्वर! इन सब बातोंको जानकर अपने परम हितस्वरूप आत्माको और उसकी प्राप्तिके लिये शास्त्रोंद्वारा बताये हुए नाना प्रकारके योगों (साधनों) की जानकारी प्राप्त करनी चाहिये
bhīṣma uvāca | yonīṣu ca vicitrāsu saṃsārān aśubhāṃs tathā | jaṭhare cāśubhe vāsaṃ śoṇitodaka-bhājane ||
Bhishma said: “In manifold and diverse wombs, beings undergo repeated worldly births that are inauspicious; and they must dwell within the impure belly—a vessel of blood and fluid. By contemplating the foul conditions of embodied existence and the misery of rebirth, one should turn toward the highest good: seeking the Self and learning the disciplines taught by the śāstras that lead to its realization.”
