Saṃhāra-krama (The Sequence of Cosmic Dissolution) — Yājñavalkya’s Discourse
Bhīṣma uvāca: Pṛthvīnātha! balavān yogī bandhanāni toḍane samartho bhavati; tasmin ātmānaṃ mocayituṃ pūrṇā śaktir āgacchati—atra tanik api saṃśayo nāsti. Balāni yogaprāptāni mayaitāni viśāṃpate, nidarśanārthaṃ sūkṣmāṇi vakṣyāmi ca punas tava.
Bhishma said: “O lord of the earth, a powerful yogin can break the bonds that bind him; within him arises complete power to liberate himself—there is not the slightest doubt of this. O protector of the people, I shall again describe to you, by way of illustration, certain subtle powers attained through yoga.”
Bhishma affirms that yoga, when fully developed, gives a yogin the strength to break inner bondage and attain self-liberation; he then signals a didactic move—illustrating this claim by describing subtle yogic powers (siddhis) as evidence of yoga’s efficacy.
In the Shanti Parva dialogue, Bhishma continues instructing King Yudhisthira. Here he reassures the king that the yogin’s capacity for liberation is certain, and he prepares to list examples of subtle powers gained through yoga to support and clarify his teaching.
