स चेन्ममार सूंजय चतुर्भद्रतरस्त्वया । पुत्रात्‌ पुण्यतरश्वैव मा पुत्रमनुतप्यथा:,'सूृंजय! वे तुम्हारी अपेक्षा चारों कल्याणमय गुणोंमें बढ़े हुए थे और तुम्हारे पुत्रसे भी अधिक पुण्यात्मा थे। जब वे भी मर गये तो तुम्हारा पुत्र किस गिनतीमें है? अत: तुम उसके लिये शोक न करो

sa cen mamāra suñjaya caturbhadrataras tvayā | putrāt puṇyataras caiva mā putram anutapyathāḥ ||

Vāyu said: “O Suñjaya, if even those who were more richly endowed than you with the four auspicious virtues, and who were indeed more meritorious than your son, have met with death—then what special claim can your son have against mortality? Therefore, do not grieve for your son.”

Death is universal and does not spare even those who are more virtuous or more excellently endowed; therefore excessive grief is to be restrained, and one should cultivate steadiness and acceptance in accordance with dharma.
