Śoka-śamana: Kṛṣṇa’s Consolation and Nārada’s Exempla to Sṛñjaya
Chapter 29
marudgaṇāḥ maruttakasya yajñe tasmin kāle bahu soma-rasaṃ pītavantaḥ | rājñā dattā dakṣiṇāḥ devānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ gandharvāṇāṃ ca sarva-yajñebhyo 'dhikā āsan || sa cen marutaḥ, sṛñjaya, caturbhadra-taraḥ tvayā | putrāt puṇya-taraś caiva; mā putram anutapyathāḥ ||
Vāyu said: “At that time, in Marutta’s sacrifice, the hosts of the Maruts drank Soma in abundance. The gifts (dakṣiṇās) that the king bestowed surpassed those given in the sacrifices of gods, humans, and Gandharvas alike. Yet even that King Marutta—who excelled you, Sṛñjaya, in the four auspicious excellences (dharma, knowledge, dispassion, and lordly prosperity), and who was even more meritorious than your son—has also died. If such a one has passed away, what need is there to speak of others? Therefore, do not grieve for your son.”
