Vāyu said: “Those heroes, the glory of the battlefield, fell while facing the foe; none was slain by a wound from behind, and none died in flight. All of them fought in the great war and gave up their lives; purified by their weapons and their warrior-duty, they have attained heaven. Therefore you should not grieve for them.”

Educational Q&A

Grief is inappropriate for warriors who died facing the enemy in righteous combat: by fulfilling kṣatriya-dharma and giving up life in battle, they are regarded as ‘purified’ and as attaining heaven; the listener is urged to replace lamentation with dharmic understanding.

Vāyudeva addresses a mourner after a great battle, emphasizing that the fallen heroes were not killed while fleeing or struck from behind; they fought directly, relinquished their lives in the thick of combat, and thus are portrayed as having reached the celestial realm.
