bhīṣma uvāca: śṛṇu rājann avahitaḥ sarvam etad yathātatham | yathāmati yathā caitac chrutapūrvaṃ mayānagha ||
Bhishma said: “Listen, O king, with full attention. I shall relate all this exactly as it is—according to my understanding and as I previously heard it, O sinless one.”
The verse emphasizes truthful transmission and responsible speech: the teacher should speak attentively and convey an account as accurately as possible, acknowledging the limits of personal understanding while remaining faithful to what was received through tradition.
Bhishma begins or continues an instructive discourse to the king (Yudhishthira), asking him to listen carefully while Bhishma narrates a prior account exactly as he had heard it, setting a tone of careful, ethical instruction.
