Sāṃkhya–Yoga Distinction and Instruction on Yogic Strength
निवेदयामास तदा शिवायामिततेजसे । देवश्रेष्ठाय रुद्राय सौम्याय बहुरूपिणे,उस समय उन्होंने अमित तेजस्वी अनेक रूपधारी सौम्य एवं शिवस्वरूप देवेश्वर रुद्रसे इस प्रकार निवेदन किया
nivedayāmāsa tadā śivāyāmitatejase | devaśreṣṭhāya rudrāya saumyāya bahurūpiṇe ||
Bhīṣma said: Then he made his humble submission to Rudra—Śiva himself—of immeasurable splendour, the foremost among the gods, gentle in aspect and yet assuming many forms.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic conduct in devotion: one should approach the divine (or any higher authority) with humility, proper honorifics, and awareness of the deity’s vast power and manifold manifestations.
Within Bhīṣma’s narration, a figure respectfully addresses Rudra/Śiva, describing him through epithets—immeasurably radiant, foremost among gods, gentle, and many-formed—before making a formal submission or request.
