एवं स्वभावमेवैतत् तद् बुद्ध्वा विहरेन्नर: । अशोचचन्नप्रहृष्यंश्व स वै विगतमत्सर:,इस प्रकार “आत्मा असंग एवं निर्लेप है” इस बातको जानकर मनुष्य शोक, हर्ष और देषका परित्याग करके विचरण करे
evaṁ svabhāvam evaitat tad buddhvā viharen naraḥ | aśocan na prahṛṣyaṁś ca sa vai vigata-matsaraḥ ||
Knowing this to be the very nature of the Self—unattached and unstained—a person should move through life without sinking into grief or being carried away by elation; and, having abandoned envy and malice, he becomes truly free from rivalry.
भीष्म उवाच
Recognize the Self’s natural condition as unattached and unstained; then live with equanimity—without grief or excessive elation—and abandon envy, which fuels conflict and inner agitation.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma continues advising on dharma and inner discipline, urging a life grounded in Self-knowledge and freedom from reactive emotions like sorrow, excitement, and envy.
