Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment
Parāśara’s Instruction
शिल्पिक: शिसल्पिनां श्रेष्ठ: सर्वशिल्पप्रवर्तक: । भगनेत्राड्कुशश्वण्ड: पूष्णो दन्तविनाशन:
śilpikaḥ śilpināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvaśilpapravartakaḥ | bhaganetrāṅkuśaśvaṇḍaḥ pūṣṇo dantavināśanaḥ ||
Bhīṣma said: He is the foremost among artisans, the originator and promoter of every craft. He is the one who struck out Bhaga’s eye, who broke Pūṣan’s teeth, and who bears the goad and the staff—remembered by the marks of his fierce, corrective power. The verse sets forth a moral vision: when order is violated, even the gods are restrained; and the very power that destroys also establishes the disciplines by which society’s arts and duties may flourish.
