पवित्र च पवित्राणां मड़लानां च मड्जलम् | गिरिको हिंडुको वृक्षो जीव: पुद्गल एव च,आप पवित्रोंके भी पवित्र और मंगलोंके भी मंगल हैं। आप ही गिरिक (अचेतनको भी चेतन करनेवाले), हिंडुक (गमनागमन करनेवाले), संसार-वृक्ष, जीव, शरीर, प्राण, सत्त्व, रज, तम, अप्रमद (स्त्रीरहित--ऊर्ध्वरेता), प्राण, अपान, समान, उदान, व्यान, उन्मेष, निमेष (आँखोंका खोलना-मींचना), छींकना और जँभाई लेना आदि चेष्टाएँ भी आप ही हैं। आपकी अग्निमयी लाल रंगकी दृष्टि भीतर छिपी हुई है। आपके मुख और उदर महान् हैं
pavitraṁ ca pavitrāṇāṁ maṅgalānāṁ ca maṅgalam | giriko hiṇḍuko vṛkṣo jīvaḥ pudgala eva ca ||
Bhishma said: You are the purest among all that is pure, and the highest auspiciousness among all that is auspicious. You are also the “Girika”—the power that awakens even what is inert; the “Hiṇḍuka”—the mover who goes and returns; the world-tree itself; the individual life-principle; and the embodied person.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse teaches an all-pervading vision of the Supreme: the highest purity and auspiciousness are not separate from the world, life, and personhood. Seeing the Divine as present in jīva (life) and pudgala (embodied individuality) supports dharmic conduct—humility, restraint, and reverence toward all beings.
In Śānti Parva, Bhishma instructs and praises the Supreme through a litany of epithets. This verse is part of that praise, identifying the Lord with cosmic principles and with the living individual, expanding the listener’s understanding from ritual purity to a comprehensive theological vision.
