Adhyāya 283: Varṇa-vṛtti, Nyāya-ārjana, and the Decline-and-Restoration of Dharma (वर्णवृत्तिः न्यायार्जनं च)

Blinded by delusion, they do not perceive the destruction that has drawn near. In this great sacrifice, a most dreadful calamity stands imminent, yet they fail to understand it. (In context, Dadhīci, seeing the gods assembled but Śiva not duly invoked or worshipped, laments that a rite without Śiva is neither true sacrifice nor true dharma, and warns that such neglect invites ruin.)

Educational Q&A

Ritual action (yajña) becomes ethically hollow when it ignores the rightful object of reverence and the principles of dharma; delusion (moha) prevents people from recognizing the consequences of such neglect, even when ruin is imminent.

Dadhīci observes a grand sacrificial assembly where gods and dānavas are present, but Śaṅkara (Śiva) has not been invoked or honored. Angered and grieved, he declares that a sacrifice without Śiva is not truly yajña or dharma and warns that a terrible destruction is about to befall the rite, though the participants, deluded, do not perceive it.
