Bhishma said: O great king, listen from me to the signs that appeared all over the body of Vṛtra when he was seized by fever.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse introduces a description of bodily signs (liṅgāni) arising from affliction, preparing the ethical frame in which actions—especially violent or sinful ones—are shown to have tangible consequences and to require discernment and, later, expiation.
Bhishma addresses the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) and begins recounting how Vṛtra, afflicted by fever, displayed various signs across his body—an opening to the episode connected with Vṛtra’s death and the broader discussion of brahmahatyā and its ramifications.
