The Account of Uśanā (Śukra): Yoga, Grievance, and Pacification

bhīṣma uvāca | neśeḍayaṃ satataṃ dehī nṛpate puṇyapāpayoḥ | tata eva samutthena tamasā rudhyate 'pi ca, nareśvara |

Bhishma said: “O king, the embodied self is not continually the independent master of merit and sin (and their results). Rather, O lord of men, it becomes veiled and constrained by the darkness that arises from those very deeds—an obscuring mass of impressions—so that it undergoes pleasure and pain under that covering.”
