utthānena jayettandrīṁ vitarka-niścayāj jayeta | maunena bahubhāṣyaṁ ca śauryeṇa ca bhayaṁ tyajet ||
Bhīṣma said: “By rising up and exerting oneself, one should conquer lethargy; by firm discernment and settled conviction, one should overcome contrary reasoning and doubt. By observing silence, one should restrain the habit of excessive speech; and by courage, one should cast off fear.”
भीष्म उवाच
Cultivate inner mastery through practical disciplines: counter sloth with energetic effort, counter doubt and perverse argument with firm discernment and conviction, curb verbosity through silence, and remove fear through courage.
