सुखं दुःखान्तमालस्यं दाक्ष्यं दुः:खं सुखोदयम्‌ । भूति: श्रीद्वीर्धृति: कीर्तिर्देक्षे वसति नालसे,आलस्य सुखरूप प्रतीत होता है, परंतु उसका अन्त दु:ख है तथा कार्यदक्षता दुःखरूप प्रतीत होती है, परंतु उससे सुखका उदय होता है। इसके सिवा ऐश्वर्य, लक्ष्मी, लज्जा, धृति और कीर्ति--ये कार्यदक्ष पुरुषमें ही निवास करती हैं, आलसीमें नहीं

Transliteration

sukhaṁ duḥkhāntam ālasyaṁ dākṣyaṁ duḥkhaṁ sukhodayam | bhūtiḥ śrīr dhṛtiḥ kīrtir dakṣe vasati nālase ||

Translation

Vyāsa said: Idleness seems pleasant, yet it ends in suffering; skillful, diligent effort seems painful, yet from it happiness arises. Prosperity, fortune, steadfastness, and fame dwell with the capable and industrious—not with the lazy.
