पापात्म-धर्मात्म-लक्षणम् तथा निर्वेदेन मोक्षमार्गः | Marks of the Sinful and the Righteous; Dispassion (Nirveda) as a Path to Liberation
ततः पित्रा चिरं स्तुत्वा चिरं चाप्राय मूर्थनि । चिरं दोर्भ्या परिष्वज्य चिरं जीवेत्युदाह्यत:
tataḥ pitrā ciraṁ stutvā ciraṁ cāprāya mūrdhani | ciraṁ dorbhyā pariṣvajya ciraṁ jīvety udāhṛtaḥ ||
Then the father, after praising him for a long while, repeatedly smelled his head in affection. He embraced him tightly with both arms for a long time, holding him to his heart, and pronounced a blessing: “My son, may you live long.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic family affection and the ethical ideal of elders blessing and affirming the younger generation—praise, physical warmth, and a benediction for long life as a model of nurturing conduct.
A father, moved by love and approval, praises his son, smells his head (a traditional gesture of tenderness), embraces him closely, and blesses him with the words “May you live long.”
