Kuṇḍadhāra-Upākhyāna: Dharma’s Superiority over Wealth and Desire
तुलाधारस्य कौन्तेय शान्तिमेवान्वपद्यत | एवं बहुमतार्थ च तुलाधारेण भाषितम् | यथौपम्योपदेशेन कि भूय: श्रोतुमिच्छसि,कुन्तीनन्दन! तुलाधारने जो उपदेश दिया था, वह बहुजनसम्मत अर्थसे युक्त था। उसे सुनकर जाजलिको परम शान्ति प्राप्त हुई। उसे यथावत् दृष्टान्तपूर्वक समझाया गया है। अब तुम और क्या सुनना चाहते हो?
bhīṣma uvāca | tulādhārasya kaunteya śāntim evānvapadyata | evaṃ bahumatārthaṃ ca tulādhāreṇa bhāṣitam | yathaupamyopadeśena kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi, kuntīnandana ||
Bhishma said: “O son of Kunti, (Jājali) attained peace alone by following the path taught by Tulādhāra. What Tulādhāra spoke was a teaching whose meaning is approved by many. It has been explained properly through instruction supported by apt analogies. Now, O Kunti’s son, what more do you wish to hear?”
भीष्म उवाच
That Tulādhāra’s counsel—presented with clear analogies and carrying a meaning accepted by many—leads the seeker to true inner peace; the emphasis is on practical, widely validated dharma rather than mere austerity or pride.
Bhīṣma, instructing Yudhiṣṭhira in the Śānti Parva, concludes the account of Tulādhāra’s instruction (which brought Jājali peace) and asks Yudhiṣṭhira what further teaching he wishes to hear.
