Inquiry into the Cause and Designation of Death

Vyāsa uvāca: karmaparāyaṇaḥ manuṣyaḥ niṣkāma-bhāvena yasya karmaṇaḥ anuṣṭhānaṃ karoti, tat pūrvakṛtān api sakāmān vā aśubhān vā karmāṇi nāśayati; evaṃ karma-kurvataḥ sādhakasya karmāṇi iha loke vā paraloke vā kutrāpi tasya bhalaṃ vā abhalaṃ vā ubhayaṃ vā kiñcid api na kurvanti.

Vyāsa said: When a person devoted to action performs his duties in a desireless spirit, that very practice destroys even earlier deeds done with selfish intent or tainted by harm. Thus, for the seeker who acts in this way, his actions can no longer produce—here in this world or in the next—any good result, bad result, or mixed result for him at all.

Educational Q&A

Desireless performance of duty (niṣkāma-karma) purifies and can nullify the binding force of prior selfish or harmful deeds; when action is done without attachment, it ceases to generate karmic results—good, bad, or mixed—for the doer.

In the Mokṣa-dharma section of Śānti Parva, Vyāsa instructs in response to Śuka’s inquiry, explaining how disciplined, non-attached action functions as a means to freedom by dissolving the efficacy of past and future karmic consequences.
