Vyāsa said: “A brāhmaṇa should know the Veda and its meaning, understand the truth of reality, follow the conduct of the cultured, and be discerning. He should be eager to act in accordance with his own dharma, yet through his actions he must not become a cause of ‘mixture’—he should not blur the boundaries of duties by blending his dharma with that of another.”

Educational Q&A

Cultivate scriptural learning and discernment, live by the standards of the wise, and perform one’s own dharma without creating confusion by mixing or appropriating duties that properly belong to another dharma.

In Śānti Parva’s instruction on righteous living, Vyāsa lays down qualities and behavioral guidelines for a brāhmaṇa—knowledge of śruti, understanding of truth, good conduct, and careful adherence to svadharma without promoting dharma-confusion (saṅkara).
