Thus ends the two hundred and thirtieth chapter of the Śānti Parva of the Śrī Mahābhārata, within the section on the duties concerning the cow (Gokṣa-dharma), presenting a dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Ugrasena.
वायुदेव उवाच
This line is a colophon (closing notice). Its function is to mark the completion of a chapter and identify its placement (Śānti Parva, within Gokṣa-dharma) and its topic (a dialogue between Kṛṣṇa and Ugrasena), rather than to state a new ethical doctrine.
The text signals that the chapter has ended: it names the larger book (Śānti Parva), the internal section (Gokṣa-dharma), and the dialogue participants (Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Ugrasena), formally concluding the chapter.
