Vyāsa explains the different measure of time for the ancestral realm: what humans count as one month is, for the Pitṛs, a complete day and night. The bright fortnight is their ‘day,’ the time for activity and the performance of their functions; the dark fortnight is their ‘night,’ the time of rest and sleep. The teaching situates human ritual life within a larger moral cosmos, implying that one’s conduct and offerings are synchronized with an unseen order and should be performed with regularity and reverence.
