Bhishma said: “I too understand this world to be just so—impermanent and not enduring.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse affirms the aśāśvata (non-eternal) nature of the world, encouraging a dharmic perspective grounded in detachment and clarity about the fleeting character of worldly conditions.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction setting, Bhishma speaks as a teacher of dharma and confirms—based on his own understanding—that the world is impermanent, reinforcing the counsel being given to the listener.
