Bhishma said: By reflecting on the authoritative testimony of the Veda and by practicing the auspicious disciplines taught in the śāstras, a person becomes free from the fear of old age and death and rests in peace. When merit and demerit are exhausted, and with them the resultant pleasures and pains also perish—when the very causal conditions and their fruits have dissolved—then those who are wholly unattached to all things abide in the Supreme Self, stainless like the sky, and directly behold Him.
