Kāla, Anityatā, and the Limits of Agency
Mahābhārata 12.217
evam ekāyana-dharmam āhur veda-vido janāḥ | yathā-jñānam upāsantaḥ sarve yānti parāṃ gatim ||
Thus do those who know the Veda describe the ‘one-way’ dharma—the discipline that leads to the single highest goal. Practising worship and contemplation according to their own measure of understanding, all seekers attain the supreme state.
Bhishma teaches that the Veda-knowers affirm an ‘ekāyana’ (single-aim) dharma: sincere spiritual practice, even when shaped by differing levels of understanding, can lead all aspirants to the supreme goal.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bhishma continues his counsel by citing the testimony of Vedic authorities: diverse modes of upāsanā, when aligned to one’s capacity and knowledge, culminate in the highest attainment.
