अध्याय २०८ — इन्द्रियनिग्रहः, सत्याहिंसात्मकवाक्, कर्मफलविवेकः
Restraint of the Senses, Non-harming Truthful Speech, and Discernment of Karmic Consequence
ऋषिर्मेधातिथे: पुत्र: कण्वो बर्हिषदस्तथा
ṛṣir medhātitheḥ putraḥ kaṇvo barhiṣadas tathā
Bhīṣma said: “The sage Kaṇva, the son of Medhātithi, and likewise (one) of the Barhiṣad lineage.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse underscores the authority of dharma-teaching through recognized lineages of seers: ethical and ritual knowledge is validated by remembered succession (ṛṣi–paramparā) and careful identification of teachers.
In Bhīṣma’s instruction during Śānti Parva, he cites or lists revered sages by name and parentage—here identifying Kaṇva as Medhātithi’s son and associating him with the Barhiṣad line—supporting a broader discussion grounded in traditional authorities.
