Adhyāya 2: Nārada’s Disclosure—Karṇa’s Training and the Brahmin’s Curse (Śānti-parva)

Nārada said: “O lord, how can the warrior order (kṣatra) attain heaven, purified by the touch of weapons?” Therefore, to bring about that very clash which would ‘purify’ them through battle, a child was fashioned from the womb of an unmarried maiden—so that he would become the begetter of conflict.

The verse presents a severe dharmic idea: for kṣatriyas, death in battle can function as a kind of ‘purification’ leading to svarga. It also raises an ethical tension—violence is not celebrated for its own sake, but shown as a providential mechanism tied to duty, destiny, and the cosmic regulation of power.
Nārada explains a divine deliberation: seeking a way for the entire kṣatriya community to reach heaven through being ‘purified by weapons,’ a cause of great conflict is set in motion by creating a child from a maiden’s womb—an agent who will become the catalyst for widespread confrontation.
