Bhishma said: “Here too, mental absorption (samādhi) and the conquest of the senses are declared essential. O King, the reason as it is heard will be explained further on. In both paths—Sāṅkhya and Yoga—restraint of the mind and discipline of the senses are regarded as indispensable.”

Educational Q&A

Both Sāṅkhya (knowledge/discrimination) and Yoga (practice/discipline) require the same ethical-psychological foundation: mastery of the senses and restraint of the mind, culminating in steady concentration (samādhi).

Bhishma continues instructing King Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and the means to inner freedom, emphasizing that regardless of the chosen philosophical path, mental and sensory discipline is mandatory, and promising to explain the supporting rationale later.
