मनु-उपदेशः — भूत-उत्पत्ति, इन्द्रिय-निवृत्ति, तथा पर-स्वभाव-विवेकः

Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature

महाभूतानि पज्चैव सर्वभूतेषु भूतकृत्‌ । अकरोत्‌ तेषु वैषम्यं तत्तु जीवो न पश्यति,सम्पूर्ण भूतोंकी सृष्टि करनेवाले परमात्माने सब प्राणियोंके शरीरोंमें पाँच ही महाभूतोंको स्थापित किया है; परंतु उनमें विषमता कर दी है--किसी महाभूतके अंशको अधिक और किसीके अंशको कम करके रखा है। उस वैषम्यको साधारण जीव नहीं देख पाता

mahābhūtāni pañcaiva sarvabhūteṣu bhūtakṛt | akarot teṣu vaiṣamyaṃ tattu jīvo na paśyati ||

Bhishma said: “The Creator of beings has placed the same five great elements within the bodies of all creatures. Yet He has arranged them with unequal proportions—making one element more prominent in some and less in others. This subtle imbalance is not perceived by the ordinary individual soul.”
