मनु-उपदेशः — भूत-उत्पत्ति, इन्द्रिय-निवृत्ति, तथा पर-स्वभाव-विवेकः

Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature

प्रध्वस्ता न निवर्तन्ते निवृत्तिनोपलभ्यते । प्रत्यक्षेण परोक्षं तदनुमानेन सिध्यति,आत्मसाक्षात्‌ हो जानेपर गुण नष्ट हो जाते हैं तो भी सर्वथा निवृत्त नहीं होते हैं; क्योंकि उनकी निवृत्ति प्रत्यक्ष नहीं देखी जाती है। जो परोक्ष वस्तु है उसकी सिद्धि अनुमानसे होती है। एक श्रेणीके विद्वानोंका ऐसा ही निश्चय है। दूसरे लोग यह मानते हैं कि गुणोंकी सर्वथा निवृत्ति हो जाती है। इन दोनों मतोंपर भलीभाँति विचार करके अपनी बुद्धिके अनुसार यथार्थ वस्तुका निश्चय करना चाहिये

pradhvastā na nivartante nivṛttir nopalabhyate | pratyakṣeṇa parokṣaṁ tad anumānena sidhyati ||

Bhīṣma explains that even when the qualities (guṇas) appear to be destroyed after realization of the Self, they do not wholly cease, because their complete cessation is not directly perceived. What lies beyond direct perception is established by inference. Thus, some scholars hold this view, while others maintain that the guṇas end absolutely; one should weigh both positions carefully and decide the truth through sound understanding.
