Bhishma said: When a person, by means of the mind, properly restrains the reins of the senses, then the Self within him shines forth—like a lamp burning steadily inside a pot. The teaching emphasizes inner discipline: ethical mastery begins with governing the senses through a well-directed mind, and from that restraint arises clear self-illumination rather than outward display.

Proper restraint of the senses through the mind leads to the manifestation of the inner Self; inner clarity arises from disciplined control, not from external action alone.
In Bhishma’s instruction on dharma and inner discipline, he uses a simile: when the mind firmly governs the senses, the Self becomes evident within—like a lamp burning inside a pot—signifying steady, inward illumination.
