Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature

Bhīṣma said: Whenever a state arises within the mind that is bound up with sorrow and brings inner displeasure, one should recognize it simply as the activation of rajas (the passion-driven quality). Therefore, on encountering that sorrow, one should not agitate the mind with anxious brooding, for worry only makes suffering grow.

Sorrowful, displeasing mental states should be identified as the rise of rajas; instead of feeding them with anxious rumination, one should remain unagitated, since worry intensifies suffering.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on inner discipline and ethical living; here he gives a practical diagnostic: recognize distress as a guṇa-driven movement (rajas) and avoid reactive worry.
