Yudhiṣṭhira said: “Grandfather, please tell me what is meant here by ‘adhyātma’—that inner reality which is contemplated in relation to a person—and explain what it truly is and how it is to be understood.”
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse introduces an inquiry into adhyātma—inner or spiritual knowledge—framing it as something to be contemplated with respect to the human person, and requesting a clear definition and method of understanding from an authoritative elder.
In the Śānti Parva dialogue, Yudhiṣṭhira approaches Bhīṣma as a teacher and asks him to explain the doctrine of adhyātma: what it is and how it should be comprehended.
