Bharadvāja said: “O Brahman! He alone is truly a renouncer and truly wise, who has offered everything into the fire of renunciation—whose every action is free from the bondage of desire.”

True renunciation is not merely abandoning external acts, but offering all actions and their fruits into ‘tyāga’—acting without being bound by desire. Such freedom from craving is presented as the mark of wisdom.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bharadvāja addresses a Brahmanical sage and defines who deserves the title ‘tyāgī’ (renouncer): the one whose deeds are unchained from desire and who has inwardly sacrificed everything through renunciation.
