In this way the Self (Ātman) remains hidden within all beings, concealed deep in the cave of the heart. It is directly realized by seers of truth through a keen and subtle intelligence. The wise person who continually applies himself to meditative discipline in the early and later watches of the night, eating lightly and purifying the inner being, comes to behold the Self within the Self—realizing it inwardly, in the very heart.
भरद्वाज उवाच
The Self is present in all beings yet remains hidden in the heart; it is realized not by external means but through sustained meditation, refined discernment, moderation in food, and inner purification—culminating in direct inward realization of the Self.
Bharadvāja is instructing about the method and conditions for realizing the Ātman: the seeker practices yoga especially in the quiet hours of night, lives with restraint, purifies the mind, and thereby gains direct vision of the inner Self.
