Bhishma said: “Many people are again and again afflicted by the sufferings of killing and captivity; yet even they do not abandon life. Instead, they continue to play among themselves, take delight, and laugh—showing that endurance and the will to live persist even amid repeated hardship.”

Even those who repeatedly face extreme pains such as violence and imprisonment still continue living and find moments of joy; therefore one should cultivate endurance (titikṣā) and not succumb to despair when afflicted by suffering.
In the Shanti Parva discourse, Bhishma is instructing Yudhishthira on conduct and inner strength; here he points to ordinary human resilience—people endure recurring calamities yet still engage in play, happiness, and laughter.
