अध्याय १७८ — प्राणवायुगतिः तथा शारीराग्निव्यवस्था
Adhyāya 178 — The courses of prāṇa-vāyu and the regulation of the bodily fire
यः कामानाप्नुयात् सर्वान् यश्चैतान् केवलांस्त्यजेत् । प्रापणात् सर्वकामानां परित्यागो विशिष्यते
yaḥ kāmān āpnuyāt sarvān yaś caitān kevalāṁs tyajet | prāpaṇāt sarvakāmānāṁ parityāgo viśiṣyate ||
Bhīṣma said: Whether a man succeeds in obtaining every desire, or instead renounces those desires entirely—between these two courses, renunciation is superior to the mere attainment of all objects of desire. In the ethical teaching of the Śānti discourse, the conquest of craving is praised as a higher victory than the fulfillment of craving.

Renunciation (parityāga) of desires is ethically superior to the successful fulfillment of all desires, because freedom from craving is a higher good than the enjoyment produced by craving’s objects.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and inner discipline after the war; here he contrasts two life-paths—acquiring all desired things versus abandoning desire itself—and endorses renunciation as the better course.
