(Instruction on Mortality, Time, and Truth) — Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 169

Those born in a noble line, endowed with good conduct and excellent virtues, are the superior men fit to be made friends. They who daily pursue the study of the śāstras, keep anger under control, and are ever strong in battle—only such eminent persons are worthy of friendship.
