मृत्यु-काल-प्रबोधनम् (Instruction on Mortality, Time, and Truth) — Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 169
तस्य विस्तीर्यते राज्यं ज्योत्स्ना ग्रहपतेरिव । प्रभो! जो अपनी शक्तिके अनुसार कर्तव्यका ठीक-ठीक पालन करते और संतुष्ट रहते हैं, जिन्हें बेमौके क्रोध नहीं आता, जो अकस्मात् स्नेहका त्याग नहीं करते, जो उदासीन हो जानेपर भी मनसे कभी बुराई नहीं चाहते, अर्थके तत्त्वको समझते हैं और अपनेको कष्टमें डालकर भी हितैषी पुरुषोंका कार्य सिद्ध करते हैं। जैसे रैगा हुआ ऊनी कपड़ा अपने रंग नहीं छोड़ता, उसी प्रकार जो मित्रकी ओरसे विरक्त नहीं होते हैं, जो क्रोधवश मित्रका अनर्थ करनेमें प्रवृत्त नहीं होते हैं तथा लोभ और मोहके वशीभूत हो मित्रकी युवतियोंपर अपनी आसक्ति नहीं दिखाते, जो मित्रके विश्वासपात्र और धर्मके प्रति अनुरक्त हैं, जिनकी दृष्टिमें मिट्टीका ढेला और सोना दोनों एक-से हैं, जो सदा सुहृदोंके प्रति सुस्थिर बुद्धि रखनेवाले हैं, सबके लिये प्रमाणभूत शास्त्रोंके अनुसार चलते हैं और प्रारब्धवश प्राप्त हुए धनमें ही संतुष्ट रहते हैं, जो कुट॒म्बका संग्रह रखते हुए सदा अपने सुहृद् एवं स्वामीके कार्य-साधनमें तत्पर रहते हैं--ऐसे श्रेष्ठ पुरुषोंके साथ जो राजा संधि (मेल) करता है, उसका राज्य उसी तरह बढ़ता है, जैसे चन्द्रमाकी चाँदनी || २०-२४ $ ।। शास्त्रनित्या जितक्रोधा बलवन्तो रणे सदा
tasya vistīryate rājyaṃ jyotsnā grahapater iva |
Bhishma said: The kingdom of that king expands and spreads out—like the moonlight of the lord of the planets (the Moon). In ethical context, the verse praises a ruler who forms alliance with truly excellent men: when a king joins himself to steadfast, disciplined, trustworthy, dharma-aligned companions, his sovereignty naturally grows, just as moonlight steadily fills the night sky.
