Khaḍgotpattiḥ (Origin and Dharmic Function of the Sword) |
bhīṣma uvāca: karoti pāpaṃ yo'jñānān nātmanaḥ vetti ca kṣayam | pradveṣṭi sādhuvṛttāṃś ca sa lokasyaiti vācyatām ||
Bhishma said: A man who, out of ignorance, commits sin, does not recognize the harm that accrues to his own self from it, and bears hatred toward those of virtuous conduct—such a person becomes a subject of public reproach in the world.
Ignorant wrongdoing is doubly destructive: it harms the doer (kṣaya of the self’s welfare) and, when coupled with hostility toward the virtuous, leads to social condemnation. The verse urges self-awareness about consequences and reverence for good conduct rather than envy or hatred.
In the Shanti Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhishthira on dharma and right conduct. Here he characterizes the person who sins out of ignorance and despises the virtuous, explaining that such a person becomes blameworthy and widely censured among people.
