Bhīmasena’s Counsel on Grief, Inner Conflict, and the Duty of Kingship (भीमसेन-उपदेशः)
शारीराज्जायते व्याधिमननसो नात्र संशय: । मानसाज्जायते वापि शारीर इति निश्चय:
śārīrāj jāyate vyādhir ananaso nātra saṁśayaḥ | mānasāj jāyate vāpi śārīra iti niścayaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana said: From a bodily cause arises disease—of this there is no doubt. And it is also certain that from a mental cause a bodily ailment may arise as well.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Illness can arise from bodily factors, and mental disturbances can also generate physical disease; therefore ethical self-governance includes guarding the mind, not only the body.
Vaiśampāyana states a reflective maxim within the Shānti Parva’s instruction: he links physical suffering and mental states, emphasizing that inner causes can produce outer afflictions.
