Bhishma said: “O dear one, for those steadfast in valor who seek true understanding and remain established on the path of sattva, gain and loss, pleasure and pain, the dear and the undesired, and even death and life are all the same. Such people, free from possessiveness and ego, look upon opposites with equal vision; therefore, with vigilance and self-control, you should serve and honor these dharma-loving great souls, for their words about what is auspicious and inauspicious are truthful, unlike those who merely speak for show.”
भीष्म उवाच
Cultivate equanimity toward life’s opposites—gain/loss, pleasure/pain, liked/disliked, life/death—by abiding in sattva and seeking true understanding; honor and serve such steady, dharma-rooted people because their discernment and speech about right and wrong are reliable.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma addresses the listener (traditionally Yudhishthira) and describes the qualities of spiritually mature, sattva-established seekers, urging respectful service to them and warning that many others merely talk without true insight.
