Śaunaka said: “In that sacred place, after bathing and drinking its water, a person is no longer tormented by the fear of dying even the very next day; he becomes fulfilled, having done what ought to be done. Therefore he does not dread death. If you go and bathe at the great lake Puṣkara, at Prabhāsa, at Uttara-mānasa, at Kālodaka, at Dṛṣadgavatī, at the confluence of the Sarasvatī, and at other holy fords such as Mānasa-sarovara, you will again obtain long life for the sake of your continued living.”

Educational Q&A

Pilgrimage and ritual purification at renowned tīrthas—especially bathing and drinking their waters—symbolize completing one’s religious duties (kṛtakṛtyatā), which dissolves anxiety about imminent death and is said to confer renewed vitality and longevity.

Śaunaka is describing the power of specific sacred sites (Puṣkara, Prabhāsa, Uttara-mānasa, Kālodaka, Dṛṣadgavatī, the Sarasvatī confluence, and Mānasarovara), advising that bathing there and drinking the water removes fear of near death and grants long life.
